When to choose coaching

Coaching conversations are helpful in addressing work-related and business situations. Coaching is a collaborative process which will enable you to explore and understand yourself, your situation, and to problem-solve. It is solution-focused, centering on outcomes and how to move in a direction you choose, in any area of your life.

Coaching is mainly about asking the right questions in a collaborative and trusting environment. As with Single Session Therapy, many of my coaching clients say that a single session is sufficient for them to handle things more productively. If you want to know the difference between therapy and coaching, see my post Therapy vs Coaching.

I do not limit coaching to a single session, of course, some clients prefer regular sessions. The key is that we make each session count, and many people say that it gives them a greater sense of control to be able to book individual sessions as and when they want to.

I use a combination of techniques including observation, active listening, exploratory questioning and enquiry. Some of the topics people consult me for coaching on are:

Goals and aspirations

In the hurly-burly of daily life it is easy to let our own agenda slip. Some people say they don’t have time to think about themselves, others believe that their dreams are impossible or that they are incapable of reaching them.

Personal resilience

Resilience is a capacity that helps people and respond well to challenge, setback and even crisis. It is the ability to ‘bounce back’, to recover and respond with commitment and optimism. It is a major factor in coping with stress, and the good news is that it is built on learnable skills.

Work-life balance

It is increasingly difficult meeting all the demands we face. Often, our own needs are last on a to-do list. Take a little time out to get your agenda sorted. Living in a more satisfying and balanced way need not mean saying ‘no’ all the time or letting people down.

Work and Career choices

Maybe you feel that your career has stalled, that you are in the wrong job, don’t have a job or are facing unwelcome changes. I help people to see and evaluate options, review the possibilities and plan the next step. Unrealised ambitions may be within reach.

Handling Difficult People

I wrote the book, and I have been guiding individuals and groups on this topic for 30 years. You can’t choose who you work with but you can choose how you handle them.

Workplace bullying

If you are on the receiving end of repeatedly abusive behaviour, or have been accused of bullying, I can help.

Change and transition

Change is inevitable but we can all learn how to handle change better. Perhaps you are thinking of moving on after a major life event like divorce, loss, retirement or a career change. Maybe you are thinking of rebuilding your life and asking yourself ‘where to from here?’. Perhaps it is simply that you want a more fulfilling life, and it is time to take stock.

Therapy vs Coaching

What’s the difference? People often ask about the difference between therapy and coaching. A more useful question to ask would be “How are they similar”, to which the answer is.”..in many ways”. The differences tend to be more about coaches and therapists themselves, than about…

My approach

How I approach therapy and coaching I use a Solution Focused approach. When people have something they want to change in their lives it is useful to work towards solutions, rather than to just focus problems and speculate on their causes. My Solution Focused approach…

Wake Up to Good Sleep

Sleep is a vital component in life-balance but this is not matched in our popular attitudes and understanding of it.

We have evolved to spend a third of our lives sleeping, yet many people think of sleep as an inconvenient waste of time, while others proclaim proudly that they “only need four hours sleep a night.”
