covert humour

The benefits of humour in the workplace cannot be understated, and yet, and yet… Somehow we still don’t trust it. Humour for managers is clearly taboo. This may be because, in the bad old days, some forms of humour were used inappropriately. Sarcasm, put-downs and other put-offs were tolerated and even wrongly dismissed as ‘banter’. Inevitably. Though some people or groups were were rightly offended, the ‘offenders’ were never taken to task or re-educated. The sad thing about this is that humour became illicit, and the beneficial effects of spontaneous and healthy humour have been lost.

Humour has a place

It is a manager’s job to rally the troops and keep morale and productivity up in these gloomy times, but this is easier said than done. Events over the past decade or so have meant that morale has gone into free-fall. Extreme negativity has crept into all areas of our working environments. Some offices almost became no-go areas as staff waited for the other shoe to drop. Employers didn’t help with their knee-jerk cutting of privileges, cancelled travel orders and slashed expense accounts, and the media screamed ‘Panic!’
Of course, gloom and doom don’t have to take over, but, in times of crisis nobody likes stand out as the only cheerful person in the office. But, even when you understand why humour for managers is important that doesn’t mean simply making a few jokes. Many of them will fall flat anyway.

How to find humour at work

The key to finding humour for managers is outlook. There are ways of going about it the wrong way, and then there are more appropriate ways. ‘Funny’ doesn’t have to be rude, loud or even instantly noticeable and consciously driven.
