About Brief Therapy
There are many myths about therapy. and one is that it lasts a long time, but this isn’t necessarily the case. Therapy should last as long as you and your therapist or counsellor think is appropriate. Some people prefer fewer sessions, some like to see their therapist for longer.
Whatever your preference, my aim is to make every session count, and to enable you to move towards your goals so that you can move on in your life. Whether we meet for a single session, a few more, or for longer-term support, is your choice. Some of the things that people consult me about are listed below:
A wide range of simple techniques can help alleviate the symptoms of depression. The evidence shows that these techniques work extremely well for many people, even those whose depression is quite severe.
Resilience won’t make problems go away, it means the ability to see past them, find enjoyment in life and handle stress better. If you aren’t as resilient as you’d like to be, you can develop skills to become more resilient.
People often find their lives dominated by an emotion-related condition. Feeling afraid for no apparent reason; being tongue tied or under-confident in certain situations; constant feelings of worry or pressure; irrational fears or panic attacks; mood swings and angry outbursts, for example, all respond well to brief treatment.
Separation, Loss, Bereavement
We generally associate grieving with the death of a loved one, but the pain and uncertainty of loss, and the difficult transition to a ‘new reality’, can happen in other situations too, such as divorce, job loss and or moving home.
We cannot ‘cure’ grief, but the pain and suffering can be eased with the right sort of discussion. Neither can you put a time-scale on when it will be right to ‘move on’. Sadly, loss can sometimes be made harder by the attitudes of well-meaning people around us. We all respond to loss differently, so there is no ‘one size fits all’. Therapy has to be tailored to your needs.
Anxiety affects us all at some time. Mostly we can reason with it, but occasionally we get stuck in a repetitive anxiety cycle that seems just impossible to break. Trying to understand it won’t work, we need to do something different. Brief therapy can help.
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is caused by traumatic,l frightening or distressing events. Most people don’t suffer lasting effects – reliving the event, flashbacks, nightmares – but some do. This may be immediate or sometime after the event. PTSD can be successfully treated using Brief Therapy techniques. The most intrusive symptoms are often significantly reduced in a single session.
Many people with a phobia resign themselves to living with it, but this doesn’t have to be the case. Though sufferers often don’t believe that anything can help them, there are several proven brief therapy techniques for dealing effectively with a phobia.
Stress and resilience
Taking a solution-focused approach to building resilience will enable you to counter the negative effects and to be more resourceful in the face of challenge or high demand. ‘Stress’ used to be a taboo subject. It is now widely recognised ass a by-product of our modern lifestyle and, particularly in some jobs, unavoidable. Learning to manage stress and reduce its impact means that you become more resilient.
I have found that there are many misunderstandings about anger-management. Anger is an emotional response, so it is more useful to think of ‘managing emotions’, rather than singling out anger. Emotions are a natural and necessary part of our makeup, but though they can be difficult to control, most people can learn to quite quickly. This includes dealing with angry feelings and outbursts.
Personal wellbeing involves a number of positive decisions about how we think and how we interact with the world. Improving wellbeing means taking simple steps that enable you to find balance – physical, mental, social, intellectual and spiritual.

Good relationships don’t happen by accident. Successful ones need maintenance and unsuccessful ones can be transformed into something more useful. A little time to reflect and discuss opens up possibilities.
