The current vogue for the pursuit of happiness is sending out some confusing messages, so here are some ideas to help clarify your thinking (or confuse you further).

There are plenty of books around on how to be happy, but you don’t need any of them; in the end it comes down to a two step process, I wrote a post about what they are some months back: How to Be Happy.

  • The term ‘Happy’ is too vague as a destination. It’s often said that it’s not something you strive for, but something you experience. So if you’d like to go to, say, Birmingham or Copenhagen, rather than trying to find the time/money, booking a ticket, and all the rest, simply imagine and act as if that you are already there.
  • Finally (for now), there are different ways to be happy; you can be happy ABOUT your job but not necessarily happy IN your job at a given moment (try replacing ‘job’ with anything you choose:  love, marriage, hospital, debt, ignorance, Bolivia, etc).
  • Finally again, ‘given moment’ is important because no two of them are the same, so the next one might be different from the present one. I’ve just realised too that what’s given cannot be taken away, in this case.

Clearer? More confused? Something to think about, at least.
