Having the courage of your own convictions, living according to your principles, being true to your values… These noble-sounding epithets can be simply expressed but are much harder to live by.

Having the confidence to do what you believe is right when others disagree requires inner strength, self belief and bravery. It also means there will be times when one is troubled by doubt, uncertainty and other discomforts. The worst of these is perhaps the loneliness.

You may never know if your decisions were the right ones, nobody will reassure you, you may feel misunderstood and even unpopular.

But then, nobody said it was going to be easy, and if you are one of those rare people who live in the light of your own honesty, the world needs you, so please keep it up!

This is so true and as you say can be a difficult and lonely path to tread. But ultimately worth it because you have remained true to yourself. Thanks for the post.

Thank you for this! It seems that the more I try to stay with my values (kindness, compassion and “real” love) the more I feel isolated and unappreciated. But this is the path I have chosen, late in life and I am learning to accept that I need to be “me”, no matter what others think of me. I really needed to read you words today…thank you again.

Thank you for your comments, I really appreciate them.
Though it can be difficult to be true to one’s values, the bonus is that actually choosing how to act in a given situation should be easier. I suppose the metaphor could be that though the path is a challenge walking gets easier.
