Good moods are contagious, whereas depression is not (though it can be passed down in families). This means that positive feelings are easier to spread than negative ones.

Having cheerful friends is good for you, and it’s also be good for your health. Research has shown that a healthy mood spreads among friends, and even to friends of friends (by 15% and 10%, respectively, since you ask).

Similar findings in the workplace show that people prefer to work with happy colleagues and tend to ‘pick up’ on positive mood.

It’s also claimed that being surrounded by friends who are in a healthy mood will double the rate of recovery from depression.

We need it, as a counterweight to the pervasively negative focus of our 24 hour media. Every time you share your good mood you do your bit.

It would be nice to think that even the most die-hard negativists and doom-mongers feel a little better when they are surrounded by positive people, even if they say they don’t appreciate it.

But unless you’re one of them, just don’t ask them to agree with you.
