Have you noticed that when you try and stop something the more persistent and present it can become?
If you want to escape unhealthy guilt and shame, with their cohort of undesirables like self-doubt, low self-belief, self-blame and self-flagellation, there is a simple rule that says you must move towards something healthier. Sports psychologists know this. They help athletes develop and move towards realistic goals, they don’t say “Try not to lose the match”.
The antidote to all the negative associations of guilt is to develop something new: self-love, self-acceptance, self-acknowledgement and self-confidence. By moving towards greater compassion for yourself, and developing a sense of your own worth, you can help counter and eventually replace the corrosive effects of unhealthy guilt.
