swearing at work

I recently wrote that “People make such a big deal out of how they feel and when they feel bad they often say and do things that make them feel worse.” I went on to say that we generally seem to believe that there’s nothing we can do to help ourselves when we are feeling down.

Even if we can’t actually control an event, we can do a lot about how we respond to it, that’s what personal resilience is all about

I didn’t wish to seem uncaring, I wanted to point out how a fatalistic attitude might help us with some things, particularly those over which we have no control (the weather, governments, how our children behave when they are out of our sight…), but if carried too far it can turn to helplessness and incapacity. And even if we can’t actually control an event, we can do a lot about how we respond to it, that’s what personal resilience is all about.
