When you were a child, what were you told you couldn’t do? We all pick up beliefs that limit our possibilities, and we create some more of our own as we go through life.

For example, I meet people who say they “aren’t good with languages”, yet they can explain quite eloquently why this is so. Or what about the idea that you are somehow second-class if you don’t have a university education?

There were once maps that showed that the World was flat. ‘There be dragons’ was used to cordon off sections of the globe that were best avoided.

We all have unexamined beliefs littering our minds, they are like invisible but outdated maps that sit just outside our awareness, and steer us away from things that (somebody, somewhere said), are out of reach, or risky.

It is worth taking a little time now and again to examine our unexamined beliefs and taboos. Updating the map can offer new possibilities for self-discovery and growth.

I’m a psychologist, coach, and therapist. All my work is aimed at enabling people to improve personal aspects of their lives and work.
