relationships

Your relationship is your refuge. Essentially, it should act as a place of comfort and sanctuary from the outside world, providing you with a safe and supportive space in which you feel safe, understood, and free to be yourself, especially during difficult or stressful times.

How do you assess the present state of your relationship? here are seven questions to to enable a self-check:

Do I actively listen to my partner? When my partner shares their thoughts or feelings, do I focus fully on them without interrupting, dismissing, or thinking ahead to my response? Active listening is a skill to be leaned. Professionals like counsellors or social workers use active listening regularly, but even they need to work at it to keep the skills alive.

Am I open and honest in my communication? Do I express my feelings, needs, and concerns clearly and respectfully, ensuring that misunderstandings are minimised?

Do I regularly show appreciation for my partner? Have I taken time recently to acknowledge my partner’s efforts, qualities, or contributions to our relationship? Do I even recognise them and thanked her/him for caring?

Do I prioritise time for our connection? Amid daily responsibilities, do I make a conscious effort to spend quality time with my partner, whether through shared activities, meaningful conversations, or simply being present?

Do I respect my partner’s individuality and boundaries? Am I mindful of their needs, personal space, and autonomy, ensuring they feel valued as an individual within our relationship?

Do I follow through on promises and commitments? Can my partner rely on me to be consistent, dependable, and trustworthy in both small and significant matters?

Am I aware of how my actions impact our relationship? Do I regularly reflect on my behaviour and adjust when necessary, ensuring that I contribute positively to the strength of our couple, rather than taking our relationship for granted?

These questions can serve as a self-check to identify areas where you can deepen your engagement and strengthen your bond with your partner. Relationships flourish when nurtured intentionally, so answering these questions honestly is a step toward greater attentiveness and care.
