Touchy-Feely
When we use terms like ‘spiritual nourishment’, ‘inner journey’, and ‘inner self’. It is only to be expected that this makes some people feel uncomfortable as we are exploring concepts – such as the thoughts, emotions, values and aspirations that guide us – that few of us examine in our daily lives. Contemporary society, our pace of life, the obsession with measurable results, and the rest, have progressively alienated us from the inner part of ourselves – our spirit if you like (there’s another one!) – and even from our ...
Managing challenging times – difficult personal and work situations
As we are bombarded with bad news about the consequences of the economic crisis it may seem difficult to remain detached from events as we go about our lives. People naturally reflect on the consequences for themselves of the current climate of uncertainty, and for some this causes worry, distraction, increased stress, even anxiety and depression. While we can do little about global events, we can all do something about how events, both at work and at home affect us personally. This requires a pragmatic stance linked to robust psychology. ...
How to Do More With Less
This is perhaps one of the defining mantras of our age. 'How to achieve more with less' is usually applied to the workplace and business, what with spiralling costs and a crashing economy and all that. We hear it so often that we might overlook how the idea can be used to improve our personal lives as well. Now it seems that there are situations where we benefit from the perception of doing less, while we are actually doing more.
Change, Reorganisation and Role-change
The structural and procedural aspects of organisational change are relatively easy to manage. How to Manage Change and Transition helps attendees understand the common responses to change and uncertainty in teams and individuals. Participants will learn how the challenges ...
Difficult? Moi? Tell it like it is.
Is pressure in the workplace making it harder to manage people? I am meeting seriously distressed and demoralised managers these days, who often can't see the wood for the trees. The result is that they are not as effective as they could be, their confidence is down and this has a negative effect on them, and the organisations they work for. Understanding what contributes might help.
Positive News
For almost 100 years psychologists have been saying that we should protect ourselves from unremitting negativity, catastrophising and the constant worry of bad news. That which we focus on becomes our reality, so too much content filled with negativity and disaster does our heads in, as they say. Here's the antidote.
The simplest detox
The idea of a detox – cleansing, healing and fresh beginnings – is both practical and symbolic. It is practical because it is about changing our habits, usually in eating, drinking and exercise. It is symbolic because it responds to something deeper in us, psychological or spiritual cleansing and renewal, if you like. Walking provides physical exercise and contact with nature nourishes the spirit. Whether you call it 'detox' or not, there's no better tonic than that, and a fitting start to the year.
“It’s a power thing…”
When someone says, "It's a power thing", or "Power corrupts"... they are not providing a useful summary, they are telling you that they haven't thought it through and are not likely to.
Customer Satisfaction Survey (Not)!
If the decision to run a Customer Satisfaction Survey is driven by complaints then the chances are it is a Customer Dis-satisfaction Survey you'll be running. It all depends on how you ask the questions.
