When is the Right Time for Therapy?

"There's no time like the present" is one answer, and it may be good advice in some situations, but perhaps not with therapy. It is generally considered to work best when someone seeks therapy, of their own free will; it is much harder to engage with anything when someone else thinks it would be a good idea. But there's another argument too. And that one is not just about therapy.

What is most urgent for most people when they are suffering is to reduce the pain. When I ask people in distress “Which is most important, to understand why you have this problem, or to be free of it?” they almost invariably reply “to be free of the problem”. It helps to distinguish between cause, why something happened, and the effect, what needs fixing to have relief from a problem.

I cannot remember one that touched what parenting is really about. Most of us want our children to grow into independent, free-thinking, fair and honest adults. Just like we are.
