If you want to be secure in your life and career, then work on your relationship skills. It will also help to be flexible, and comfortable with change.

People with good interpersonal skills score better in surveys on life-fulfilment. Regardless of work and ambition, getting on well with people has plenty of benefits. We are a social species, after all, and being social is more important for our survival and wellbeing than any métier ever was.

In order to be good with other people, you have to have some insight into your own drives, motivations, thoughts and feelings. It’s a win-win situation; understanding (and liking) yourself means that you can get along better with others.

As we all, inevitably, will have to face problems in life, it will also be a benefit to be light on your feet and able to adjust to new conditions.

Adaptable people tend to be more creative, and creativity and originality are qualities which will always be in demand (unless you want to work as a drone). Adaptable people are also more resilient.

So there you have it. I’m not saying that it’s not important to develop expertise to help with professional development. I am saying that to be a well-rounded and secure citizen of the future you’ll also need to nurture social skills, be self-aware, and open to new possibilities.

Then again, why wait for the future?

I’m a psychologist, coach, and therapist. All my work is aimed at enabling people to improve personal aspects of their lives and work.
