hopes and dreams

Your hopes and dreams can help steer and motivate you. In a crisis, they can offer you refuge and consolation. But unless you are actually working towards them, that’s as far as it goes.

If you are you are like most of us, there will be something – or several things – that you are going to do ‘one day’. I don’t mean chores (though I do have quite a list), I mean the bigger stuff linked to ambitions and aspirations. Ideas that will allow you to metaphysically morph into a self-actualised version of you; to find fulfilment, meet your destiny, fly like an eagle.

Why wait? I don’t think it’s got to do with money, opportunity or the freedom to act, not really. They are the reasons we give ourselves to justify our inertia. People who DO do it very rarely say later “I suddenly found I was at a point in my life where I had the time and the money to do whatever I wanted”. It’s far more likely that what triggered their change was a crisis, a restriction or some unwelcome circumstance.

Don’t wait for a crisis

So is that what are you waiting for? A crisis that will push you to get on with whatever it is that you have been promising yourself? Probably not. The real reasons for most of us are far more mundane; we don’t chase our dreams because:

  • We don’t dare (What if I fail?)
  • We don’t know how to take the first step (Where do I start?)
  • We are afraid of not conforming (What will others think?)
  • Fear of change (Will I lose what I’ve got, even though I’m not happy with it?).

My advice? Give up the false promises to yourself. Focus instead on doing some little thing each day that challenges one of your personal taboos or self-imposed limiting beliefs about what is possible for you.

Small steps eventually lead to bigger things. Each time you move a little closer to your hopes and dreams the process gets a little more real. Then your hopes and dreams  You’d better believe it!
