But, the way you breathe can change your energy, your mood, even your health. Paradoxically, the better we are able to withdraw and find personal space the more likely we are to remain connected with others and the world that surrounds us. The capacity to be alone is a vital resource for mental and spiritual wellbeing. But 'space' should not be confused with 'place'; how we are is much more important than where we are.
Meaningful time spent alone is as essential to our wellbeing. The pace and demands of 21st-century living leave little time for reflection, so opportunities to switch off and disconnect are few. Unless we take action to counteract it, the constant pressure inevitably shapes our lives and not for the better.
Mindfulness and meditation are closely related but distinct concepts. Meditation is a broad category of mental training practises designed to enhance focus, awareness, and emotional regulation. It includes different techniques.
You can be calmer in most situations with a little regular practice. The key here is to work on yourself by improving your stress responses generally, and building your resilience.
By sharpening your morning routine, you set yourself up for a healthier, more balanced day. With just a few mindful changes, your mornings can be a time of rejuvenation, tuning your well-being from the moment you wake up.
These simple steps to wellbeing are not in doubt but they are the first to go when we find ourselves under pressure. Next time you feel like cancelling a social engagement, you are too busy to connect with those you, or too tired or worried to engage in your hobby, consider this.
