I'm not sure if they all do it, but my dog has shown me how it pays off to have positive expectations. He's also helped me learn something about my own needs (like I need six walks a day, apparently).
Being open to new information means suspending judgement. It's easier said than done; it takes practice and genuine courage to let go of one's expectations and assumptions.
We are all spiritual beings in that we have an inner life that is at least as important as what goes on around us. When you read about people we look to as role models and exemplars – those who have achieved something noteworthy or admirable – they always acknowledge the importance of self knowledge and attitude, and these tend to be decisive in their success. 'Spirituality' doesn't mean something absurd or weird. On the other hand, it is absurd not to own your spirituality, and probably a bit weird.
Healthy guilt is a nuisance, but that's it's job, to nag at us to keep us in line. Unhealthy guilt, on the other hand, is more than a nuisance; it can be pervasive and toxic. You can't get rid of it by apology, and even if you could, there's often no-one to apologise to. I have a problem with this sort of guilt, can you help?
Do you ever feel misunderstood? If you do, you'll know that it's a lonely feeling. It often happens to me. On a good day it makes me realise that I must make myself clearer. And its surprising, once I get past my sense of indignation at being misunderstood (and frustration with those who misunderstand me), how often I learn something about myself (like, even though I thought I was being clear, I wasn't). Striving for ecellence is all very well, but it's tiring, and for many of us a waste of time. Give yourself a break, if you can claw your way through your delusions about what is possible, you might find that you are happier as you are.
