We all have hopes and dreams and promises of things we'll do 'one day'. What stops us turning them into reality is usually the small stuff that's within our control. Excuses are fine, up to a point, but they can turn into a form of self-deception to keep us quiet while we are waiting for the hearse.
Things may be hopeless, but that doesn't mean we are powerless. The thing is, it's easier to go with herd mentality than it is to stay true to our personal values, so we compromise by refusing to challenge the things we don't like. It's the road to hell.
Things are only as they seem because they are that way, and they are as they are because they seem that way. It's important to distinguish between description, and definition.
Most of us have something about ourselves that we'd like to change or improve on. Having a clear idea of where you'd like to end up is more important than worrying how you'll get there. But the vision needs to be more than just vague and wooly aspirations like "To be happier", or "To be comfortable in life". Sensible though such hankerings are, they don't contain enough detail to guide you.
When lost in a quandary or struggling in a crisis how do you respond? I don't mean the day-to-day stuff, I mean real, critical, mid-life, existential, where-to-from-here-I'm-in-a-total-panic-because-I-feel-lost sort of crisis.

Being 'spoilt for choice' is a nicer problem to have than feeling trapped by circumstance. If you are unfortunate enough to find yourself in a situation you feel helpless to change, creating a range of options can be empowering, without having to actually do anything else.
